Proteinuria Management
What is proteinuria?
Proteinuria is a condition where an abnormal amount of protein is found in the urine, indicating that the kidneys are not filtering blood properly. Healthy kidneys normally prevent significant amounts of protein from passing into the urine, but damage to the kidney's filtering units (glomeruli) can cause leakage. It is often an early sign of kidney disease and may be caused by conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or other kidney disorders.
Why is proteinuria bad?
Proteinuria is a concerning sign because it indicates damage to the kidneys' filtering system, which can lead to further kidney injury if left untreated. The presence of protein in the urine reflects a loss of essential proteins needed for various bodily functions, such as maintaining fluid balance and fighting infections. Persistent proteinuria also accelerates kidney disease progression, increasing the risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD) or kidney failure and heightening the likelihood of cardiovascular complications. Early detection and treatment are crucial to protect kidney function and overall health.
